Many people hesitate to run a mile because it seems daunting, but they know they can run to the nearest light post, and then the next one, gradually reaching their goal. Similarly, we focused on short-term, attainable goals for our incentive program, offering a $100 gas card for two weeks of perfect attendance. This approach made perfect attendance achievable and led to a significant increase in attendance and a decrease in turnover.
Before the Gas+ program, attendance was as low as 24%. That meant managers had to overstaff to accommodate people calling out. Staff members had to work double shifts or were asked to come in on their day off. Our teams were struggling with low morale.
Now, we consistently have 84-87% perfect attendance and a decrease in turnover rate to 27%. Turnover in the casino industry can be as high as 80%, and our low turnover indicates improved job satisfaction and engagement. When I walk around and talk to staff, I don’t hear the struggles with staffing and morale that I did before.
I love this program for many reasons, not the least of which is that it accommodates people’s lives and gives them the dignity and respect they deserve as valuable team members.
It also allows our staff to focus on providing excellent guest service, vital to Spirit Mountain’s success.
